The Next Element Academy is a professionally run Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy dedicated to excellence in instruction, character, and community. Locally owned and veteran-led, our academy has proudly served the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina area since November 2018, providing world-class Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training for students of all ages and experience levels.
At The Next Element Academy, we believe Jiu-Jitsu is more than a martial art—it is a vehicle for personal growth, discipline, confidence, and lifelong learning. Today, Derrick dedicates his full time and energy to training the next generation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, passing on the lessons learned from decades of competition, coaching, and service. Whether your goal is self-defense, competition, fitness, or personal development, The Next Element Academy offers top-tier instruction grounded in experience, integrity, and excellence.
YOUR Coach
The academy is owned and led by Derrick Kennington, a highly experienced Jiu Jitsu black belt, former professional fighter, and United States Air Force veteran.
Derrick brings over 20 years of training experience and 15+ years of coaching to the mats. He is an IBJJF-certified 2nd degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, having received his black belt in 2014 under UFC veteran Kurt Pellegrino. His teaching emphasizes real-world application, technical precision, and proven competition experience.
Before retiring from professional competition in 2018, Derrick spent 11 years competing in MMA with major organizations including Bellator and CFFC, while also training and competing worldwide—experience that directly shapes the academy’s approach to effective, practical Jiu-Jitsu.
In addition to his martial arts background, Derrick served over 12 years in the U.S. Air Force, leaving as a Technical Sergeant. Following his military career, he chose to dedicate himself full-time to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, bringing disciplined leadership, integrity, and a commitment to excellence to every student at The Next Element Academy.
